Susan H. (?) married John W. Chappell, son of Thomas Chappell and Pamela Chappell, before 1836. Her married name was Susan H Chappell. Susan H. (?) was also known as Sarah H Chappell. She was involved in probating of the estate of John W. Chappell in November 1839 at Sussex County, Virginia, . She was named as Susan H Chappell, his widow.3 Susan H Chappell was involved in probating of the estate of John W. Chappell, her husband, on 6 August 1840 at Sussex County, Virginia.4 Susan H Chappell witnessed the probate of the estate of John W. Chappell on 5 November 1840 at Sussex County, Virginia.5 The probate document read as follows:

The widow retained 1 mettle skillet, 4 sheep, 1 Gray Mare, and 6 silver spoons, 2 Beds, 1 bureau and (?).

Susan H Chappell of Sussex County, Virginia, transferred a deed of property recorded 3 December 1846 to John Thomas A. Chappell, Rebecca A. Chappell and Richard J Tucker . There was a valuation of the slaves for a total of $2650, allotting to Susan H Chappell, $883.33 one-third, her third of the negroes. Although deceased, John W. Chappell was mentioned as the husband of Susan H Chappell. She was the administrator of his estate.6 The deed read as follows:
Suit brought in Sussex County Chancery Court, Nov. Term 1839 between the plantiff Susan H. Chappell widow of John W Chappell in her own right and as administratrix of the said John W. Chappell decd, plantiff against Rebecca A (or S) P. Mary E. and John T. A. Chappell infant children of John W. Chappell deceased by A. G. Mitchell their Guardian at litem appointed by the Court to defend them in this behalf defendants.

The Court appointed Abraham G. Mitchell Guardian ad litem specially to defend the infant defendants. William C. Pace, Joseph, Jarrad, Edwin G Scott, William B. Jarrad, and Micajah Ellis were appointed Commissioners, any three of whom may act, on some convenient day to be appointed by the parties, meet at the late residence of John W. Chappell deceased accompanied by the County Surveyor and value and divide the lands of which said decedent died owning so that they allot one-third part to Susan H. Chappell widow, in right of her dower, and the same with the slaves.

The slaves were valued at $2650, Susan was allotted $883.33 1/3 by Joseph Jarrad, William Pace and W B Jarrad.

Abraham Green Mitchell and Emaline S. A. Jarrett Mitchell of Sussex County, Virginia, transferred a deed of property recorded 4 March 1852 to Susan H. (?) Dinwiddie County, Virginia containing 402.5 acres of land in Sussex County, Virginia, for $7,898. It was recorded 4 Mar 1852.9 The deed read as follows:

Eveline S. A. Mitchell his wife of the County of Dinwiddie

To: Susan Chappell of the county of Sussex for $898 paid by Susan Chappell for 402.5 acres (more or less) in Sussex County bounded as follows:

"On the North by the lands of Edward A. Wyatt, on the East by the lands of Stephen P Pool, on the South by the lands of Charles E. Coghill, On the West by the lands of said Coghill.

Chappell. John E. Stewart and Richard J Tucker was listed as a neighbor. She was listed as Susan H Chappelle, age 42, farmer. Her real estate was worth $500; her personal property, $4,000.1

Susan H. (?) was listed as the head of household on the 1870 census on 4 August 1870 at Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Also living in the house was Mary E. Chappell and John Thomas A. Chappell. She was listed as Susan Chappell, age 52, born in Virginia, keeping house. Her real estate was worth $1,000.2 Susan H. (?) and Rebecca A. Chappell, Mary E. Chappell and John Thomas A. Chappell of Sussex County, Virginia, transferred a deed of property dated 1 October 1870 to John T Newbury, containing 648 acres of land in Sussex County, Virginia, for $1296. Although deceased, John W. Chappell was mentioned . It was dated on 2 Aug 1869 and recorded on 1 Oct 1870.10 The deed read as follows:

Newberry for #1296 dated 2nd Aug 1869 - 648 acres of land (more or less) lying in Sussex County about 32 miles from Petersburg, VA on the Smithfield road, bounded on the north by the land of Mrs. E. A. Pace, on the East by these of Bennet Griffin, on the south by these of Walter Scott, and west by those of E. G. Scott and Drake, it being the same land which was inherited by the said parties... from the late John W. Chappell.
