[I also have a date of 17 Sep 1873, but I don't remember where that date came from.]1,2,3 He was the son of John Thomas A. Chappell and Susan Bolling Stewart.

John Robert Chappell Sr married Emroy Temperance Mitchell, daughter of William H. Mitchell and Dora J Mitchell, on 13 February 1896 at Concord United Methodist Church, 16703 Walkers Mill Road, Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia, 23882. He was 22 at the time. John Robert Chappell Sr died on 14 January 1942 at Richmond, Virginia, at age 68 of bronco pneumonia & myocarditus, a heart attack. John was survived by his children John Robert Chappell Jr, Clifford Burnice Chappell Sr, Mabel Eudora Chappell, Alice Louise Chappell, Otho William Chappell, Amos Thornton Chappell.29 He was buried on 15 January 1942 in Chappell-Poole-Stewart Family Farm Cemetery, located at 4117 Stewart Road, Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia, aged 68. There is no headstone.30,31

On 17 January 1942, John's obituary appeared in the newspaper in Richmond, Virginia. It listed John Robert Chappell Jr, Amos Thornton Chappell, Otho William Chappell, Clifford Burnice Chappell Sr, Alice Louise Chappell and Mabel Eudora Chappell as surviving him.30

John's obituary read:
John R Chappell, 68, of Sussex County, died early today at a local hospital. The funeral services will be held at 3 pm Thursday at his home near Jarratt with internment in the family cemetery.

He is survived by 4 sons, John R Chappell, Jr and A Thornton Chappell of Richmond, Otho Chappell of Sussex County, and Clifford B Chappell of Florence, South Carolina and two daughters Mrs Arthur Poole of Sussex County and Mrs. Melvin Powell of South Boston (VA)

John Robert Chappell Sr left no will but his estate was probated on 14 May 1942 in Sussex County, Virginia.32 The probate document read as follows:

He was listed in the obituary of Clifford Burnice Chappell Sr on 8 June 1955 as preceding him in death.

Clifford Burnice Chappell Sr's obituary read:
C. B. Chappell - Clifford Burnice Chappell, 51, of Douglass Street Extension, Florence, died 2:32 am Tuesday in a local hospital after a critical illness of three days. He had been in declining health for the past two years.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 am Thursday in the Waters Funeral Home by Dr. E. E. Colvin, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, and the Rev William Howard, pastor of Five Points Baptist Church. Burial will be in in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Chappell, a resident of Florence for 30 years, was born June 24, 1904, in Jarratt, Va., a son of the late John Robert and Emma Mitchell Chappell both of Jarratt, VA. He was employed as a messenger for the Railway Express Agency for 1 years and for several years was employed as salesman for the American Bakeries.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church; a Mason and member of Hampton Lodge 204 A.FM; the Daughters Of America and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks. Freight Handlers, and Express and Station Employees. He was a graduate of Jarratt High School of Jarratt, Va.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. C. B. Chappell, of Florence, who is the former Miss Mary Louise Luhrs; one daughter, Mrs. William B. Finklea, of Florence; one son, Clifford B. Chappell Jr. of Florence; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Poole, of Jarratt,Va., and Mrs. Mell Powell of Danville, Va; three brothers, John R. Chappell of Richmond, Va., Otho Chappell, of Jarratt, Va., and Thornton Chappell, of Arlington, Va., and two grandsons.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Ernest allen, W. A. McClellan, Aubrey Turner, Cecil M. Camlin, Edwin K. turner, and Frank Hunter.

Died at the age of 68 years 3 months and 28 days as a widower in the Nightingale Nursing Home, Richmond, VA. Order of onset were as follows: Bronco Pneumonia (1 Dec 1941); contributory causes: myocarditis (5 Jan 1942). No operation. Confirmed by physical exam. No autopsy.

Burial listed as "Removal to Jarratt, VA." Was widowed at time of death.
