Mary Horry Eppes appeared in the 1910 census as a daughter of Edward Mitchell Eppes Sr on 16 April 1910 in 317 North Eleventh Street, Richmond, Virginia. She was listed as Mary H Eppes, age 8, born in Virginia.2
Mary Horry Eppes appeared in the 1920 census as a daughter of Edward Mitchell Eppes Sr on 3 January 1920 in 2234 West Grace Street, Richmond, Virginia. She was listed as Mary H Eppes, age 18, single, working as a stenographer [type of company illegible].4
Mary Horry Eppes married John Robert Chappell Jr, son of John Robert Chappell Sr and Emroy Temperance Mitchell, on 2 February 1924 at 206-A North Shepard Street, Richmond, Virginia. She was 22 at the time. Her parents were listed as Edward Mitchell Eppes Sr and Mary Shubrick Horry. His parents were listed as John Robert Chappell Sr and Emroy Temperance Mitchell. They were married by Rev. William Cox at 206A North Shepard Street, Richmond, VA. He is listed as 25 and single; she, as 22 and single. His address at time of marriage was 206-A Sheppard St, Richmond, VA. His occupation was insurance, and his birthplace was listed as Sussex County. Her birthplace and residence was listed as Richmond, VA.5 Her married name was Mary Horry Eppes Chappell.6 Mary Horry Eppes also went by the name of Horry Chappell.
A family picture was taken in February 1924 at Ormond Beach, Volusia County, Florida, while Mary Horry Eppes Chappell was on her honeymoon with the following people: Abner Whatley Lamar Jr, Mary Horry Eppes Chappell, William Landrum Lamar.7

This letter from Horry's genealogy trunk was found. It was the result of an inquiry letter she had written asking for information about her grandfather's Civil war service. I think this was because she wanted to join a group and needed proof. Photocopy of letter dated Sept 1, 1925 saying: "Copy from the Adjutant General's office, Washington. War Dept. Sept 1, 1925. The Confederate records on file in this Department show that: John T. Eppes, a private of Capt. A.J(or Z) Jones' Company (Pamunkey Artilery) Va. Heavy Artillery, C.S.A., enlisted Dec 12, 1863, in New Kent Co,, Va. for the War. On the roll of the company, dated Feb 28, 1865, last on file, he was reported "Absent on sick furlough". He was paroled April 21, 1865, the date of capture not being shown.
When she was 25, her father, Edward Mitchell Eppes Sr, died on 5 June 1927 at Richmond, Virginia, at age 58.8
Mary Horry Eppes Chappell appeared in the 1930 census as the wife of John Robert Chappell Jr 1503 Bellevue Avenue, Richmond, Virginia, on 7 April 1930. She was listed as Mary H Chappell, age 28, born in Viginia. She was 22 when she got married.9
A deed was recorded on 20 June 1945 between Mary Horry Eppes of the first part, Mabel Eudora Chappell of the second part, and Alice Louise Chappell Pooleof the third part . Mabel received 75 acres, and Alice recieved 137 acres. This was the same property converyed to John R Chappell Sr by Nannie P Chappell by deed recorded 12 Dec 1912, Deed Book 21, page 533 and plat of James Fields, Surveyor, in Plat Book 1, page 58 in Sussex County, Virginia. This deed was recorded 25 Sep 1945. The plat can be found in Plat Book 6, page 66.10
When she was 46, her mother, Mary Shubrick Horry, died on 21 June 1948 at Richmond, Virginia, at age 75.

She appeared in a news article about gardening at Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, on 29 January 1961 . The picture was titled "Mrs. John R Chappell's Hothouse is filled with ever-changing Bloom."14
Alice Louise Chappell held a reunion on 5 August 1962 at Old Hickory, Sussex County, Virginia, and she attended.15
She appeared in a news article about orchids at Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, on 7 March 1965, with a picture of her and her orchids.16 At the time of his death in 1968, Mary Horry Eppes Chappell and John Robert Chappell Jr were residing at 3615-A Brook Road in Richmond, Virginia, 23227.
When she was 67, her husband, John Robert Chappell Jr, died on 27 December 1968 at Richmond Memorial Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, at age 70 of a heart attack.17,18

John Robert Chappell Jr., chairman of the board and founder of the John R. Chappell Agency, Inc., died here Friday. He was 70.
Mr. Chappell, of 3615-A Brook Road, established the insurance agency in December 1925.
He was the first president of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Agents of the Virginia-District of Columbia Mutual Agents' Association and of the Richmond Mutual Agents' Association.
He was also a director of the Southern Bank and Trust Co. and the Peoples Finance Service. He was a former member of the Richmond School Board.
He was a native of Sussex County and a 1920 graduate of the College of William and Mary.
Mr. Chappell was also a member of the Southern Seniors Golf Association, the Virginia Senior Golf Association, the Kiwanis Club of Richmond and the Country Club of Virginia.
He was also a member of the Hermitage Country Club, the Commonwealth Club, and Acca Temple Shrine. He was a contract bridge life master.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Horry Chappell; one daughter, Mrs. Nancy C. Walters of Richmond; one son, John R. Chappell III of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Powell of Danville and Mrs. Alice Poole of Jarratt, and two brothers, Otho Chappell of Jarratt and A. T. Chappell of Arlington.

John Robert Chappell Jr left a will at Richmond, Virginia, and mentioned Mary Horry Eppes.23 She wrote her last will on 24 August 1970.24 She was described as 5' 8" tall. She had experienced pancriatis and had her pancreas removed in experimental surgery and did well afterwards. She was diagnosed in Jan 1972 with ALS and died that July.
Mary Horry Eppes died on 29 July 1972 at Broward County, Florida, at age 70 from complications due to ALS. She basically starved to death as she could only eat a half a cup of soft-boiled egg a day. The muscles in her body were just not working due to the disease. Mary was survived by her children, John Robert Chappell III, Nancy Heyward Chappell.1,25
Mary's obituary appeared in the newspaper entitled "Mrs. Chappell Dies at age 70" in Boca Raton, Florida. She was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, located at 4000 Pilots Lane, Henrico, Henrico County, Virginia, aged 70.
