John Robert Chappell, Jr.

While he is one of the more recent recruits to the ranks of insurance men of Richmond, John Robert Chappell, Jr., has already made a favorable impression in his chosen avenue of activity, and as manager of the Virginia department of the Security Mutual Casualty Company of Chicago is building up a steadily-increasing and desirable business.

Mr. Chappell is a native Virginian, born in Sussex County June 17, 1898, a son of John Robert and Emma Roy (Mitchell) Chappell. Mr. Chappell is connected with the Rolfe, Randolph, and Bowling families, all old and distinguished ones of the Old Dominion, and through the Chappells is descended from an English ancestor who immigrated to Virginia in Colonial times. His paternal grandfather, John Robert Chappell the first, was born in 1844, in Sussex County, Virgina, where he spent his entire life and died in 1899. A school teacher by vocation, he made his home near Jarratt, and was widely and favorably known for his educational labors, his personal integrity and his good citizenship. During the war between the states he served in the 113th Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry, under Colonel Malone, and was at the siege of Petersburg, at the Wilderness, and in various other engagements from Manassas to Appomattox. He was wounded on several occasions, at one time receiving a severe wound in the shoulder, from which he never fully recovered. He married Nannie Stewart, who was born in 1845, in Sussex County, where she still survives him, and they reared a family of six sons and two daughters: John Chappell; Markham H., who resides in Sussex County, where he operates the old homestead farm; Harvey, who is engaged in the tinning and plumbing business at Petersburg; Andrew, who is engaged in agricultural pursuits in Sussex County; Richard, also a farmer of Sussex County; Willie, who follows the same line of work in that locality; Laura, who is unmarried and makes her home with her mother in Sussex County; and Mrs. Nannie Tucker, who died at Petersburg.

John Robert Chappell, the father of John R. Chappell of this review, was born in Sussex County, where he has passed his entire life in the pursuits of the soil, his home being located near the town of Jarratt. A man of sound abilities and great industry, he has so directed his operations that he has made a success, and his fertile and productive property is improved with modern buildings and cultivated by the latest machinery. He is a democrat in politics, but while a man of some influence in his community, is not a seeker
for public office. His religious connection is with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Mr. Chappell married Miss Emma Roy Mitchell, who was born in 1875, in Sussex County, and they are the parents of seven children: John Robert, Jr., Thomas, a traveling salesman, residing at Wilmington, North Carolina; Clifford, a student of the high school in Sussex County; Mabel, a student of the Jarratt High School; and Alice, Otho and Thornton, who attend the graded school.

John Robert Chappell attended the public schools of Sussex County and graduated from the Jarratt High School as a member of the class of 1917. He then entered William and Mary College, from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts as a member of the graduating class of 1920, and while attending college was admitted to membership in the Sigma Nu Greek letter fraternity. In 1920, Mr. Chappell came to Richmond and accepted a position as claim adjuster for the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Limited, of London, England, a position which he held until August, 1921, when he resigned and became superintendent of the Integrity Mutual Casualty Company of Virginia. On January 1, 1922, Mr. Chappell assumed his present duties as manager of the Virginia department of the Security Mutual Casualty Company of Chicago, Illinois. He maintains offices in Room 609 Virginia Railway and Power Building, and has built up a large and representative patronage. At this writing Mr. Chappell is attending night classes at the University of Richmond, law department, and is a member of the Delta Theta Phi Greek letter legal fraternity. He belongs also to Edwards Lodge No. 308, A.F. and A.M., Sussex County, and to Concord Methodist Episcopal Church, South. During the late war he was a member of the Students' Army Training Corps at William and Mary College. Mr. Chappell is not married, and his legal residence is the home of his parents at Jarratt, Sussex County.
